Kryptonians have too many rules and regulations. For instance, there is a very long, and dry, list of things you are supposed to do when courting someone, all of which Eirene keeps forgetting the moment she's not actually looking at it.

It's taken over a month to get Jor-El to agree to this, even though it's highly irregular (he posited that Kal-El should be courting her, but Eirene has no father to ask, so this is how it is) and quite possibly entertainment for the entire planet.

Eirene isn't even sure why she's doing this, except that it's very important that Kal stays in her life. Someday she'll return to Earth, and if he's still alive, she wants him to go with her. For now, though, the goddess is just going to leave a bundle of flowers on his doorstep while no one's around.

Because, really, she can't keep all the rituals straight and this is the best idea she's come up with.

Unfortunately, Kal isn't home. Fortunately, he's just returning, so Eirene will be given a rather confused look when she turns around.

"What are you doing?"

O_O

Crap.

"I was, uhm, leaving a gift for you."

The flowers are eyed. Then so is the goddess.

"Is there an occasion I am unaware of?"

Eirene draws herself up to her full height.

"It's customary to give gifts to people you are dating."

Or want to date. Whatever.

"Dating." He remembers that term from before. "You realize my father is already married."

Look! A joke!

She might have a heart attack on the spot.

"Then they are for you."

"Then I thank you."

He steps around her to the door and picks the bundle up. "Are these of your making?"

"You're welcome."

She steps back, giving him a little more space, and reminds herself that she isn't all that shy of a person.

"Yes. None of the species grow here."

Yet.

He nods and then opens the door, waiting. Very likely for her to enter.

"You will have to teach me how to care for them."

She steps inside after a moment's hesitation, more nervous than she wants to let on.

"Living flowers need soil to grow. Those just need a vase and water."

Naturally, Kal sees no reason she should be.

"That seems simple enough," he replies, following her inside.

Naturally. Kal is also a guy.

"It is. Remember to change the water out regularly, and they won't die completely."

"They will not live forever."

Beat.

"Will they?"

"No." There's a sad shake of her head. "Only a few weeks at best."

"I see." He studies the flowers a bit longer and then removes a vase-shaped container from a shelf and starts to set the stems inside.

"Is there a meaning to this gift?"
