"I'm sorry. What?"

Eirene eyes the doctor, wondering why she agreed to come in on a Sunday and be poked and prodded for an hour. It's not like she doesn't have better things to do, like learning how to live as a human, or run decidedly unhuman-like errands by checking in on several hot spots around the globe. But this.

This takes the cake.

"Mrs. Kent, I'm afraid that you're progressing at a more rapid pace than expected. The fetus is exhibiting the growth and development of a woman entering her seventh month." The doctor looks fairly apologetic, though she's not sure if that's because he really is, or he actually believes that she'll turn him into something inanimate in revenge.

Fingers lift to pinch the bridge of her nose, a soft sigh following soon after. "Are you absolutely sure." Eirene's stomach clenches at the affirmative nod. "Yes, ma'am. I'm going to recommend as much rest as possible until after she's born, Mrs. Kent." It's a credit to STAR labs that the medical professional does not blanch at the glare she does shoot him. "Clark's not going to be happy."

It's her mantra all the way back home.

She looks briefly mutinous, lips pursed in a very un-peace-like way. "I'm not supposed to do anything for two months, Clark. How can I be an effective goddess on bed rest?"

Nevermind she still isn't sleeping.

Next to go on the couch? Eirene. Clark sets her down gently and settles down beside her. "Well, you're going to have to ask your family to take of things for you until you're ready to go back out there yourself."

Goddess. Is. Not. Happy. Her husband may get a pillow tossed in his direction. "They can't. That's the fun part about being the personification of a unique concept."

Now she's gone into the pouting phase of tonight's tantrum. "I already know they will, but that does nothing to alleviate me feeling useless." And yes, she's already had this conversation with Clark. But his wife is in a mood.

Granted, the change from eternal goddess to cranky pregnant woman might make some husbands more secure.

Clark is fairly certain he can handle this storm. Fairly.

"Well, look at it this way: It's only two months. It could have been four."

That? Is a glare. " 's not funny, Clark Jerome Kent." Also, there are more pillows on her side of the couch, and she might be torn between eying or throwing them.

"How is it not bad? You ... we... were supposed to have an easy, problem free pregnancy. I promised." She does squeeze his hand after a moment.

Clark gives her a Look. "Okay, first of all? You can't promise that. No one knows what's going to happen; people like us have never had a baby before. Second of all, it's really okay. We're as ready for this as we're going to be, whether it's in four months, two months or tomorrow."

"Okay, what happens if the baby does arrive tomorrow?" Eirene could just be arguing for the principle, because she's not allowed to be this grumpy outside of being pregnant. Or she could still be a little weirded out from the poking and prodding at STAR.

... Yes, it is. Clark's wife doesn't understand why he's not as panicky about this new development as she is.

Now she relaxes a little, curling against him. If the argument seems familiar, it's simply because Eirene can't protect the baby through force, and worries. "Thank you, Clark."

This is possibly why she doesn't sleep anymore.

"How's the farm going," Eirene asks eventually, once she's let herself have some quality time with his chest. Kryptonian boyscouts are damn comfortable.
